Karelia is a long disputed region that straddles the borders of Finland and Russia. It has its own language (closely related to Finnish) and culture. Karelian culture is considered by many Finns to be the purest representation of Finnish culture — untouched by Germanic influences. Jussi Huovinen lives in Hietajärvi, a tiny village a few hundred metres from the Russian border in Finland.
